The short answer
Lab-made shilajit is built from commercially available fulvic acid blended into a carrier paste. It is not a diluted version of the real thing — it is a different product designed to match the specification real shilajit is tested against, which is why a certificate of analysis cannot separate the two. Provenance evidence can.
How lab-made shilajit is produced
Fulvic acid is an industrial commodity. It is extracted from peat, leonardite and other sources, sold in bulk, and used across agriculture and supplements. There is nothing sinister about it existing.
What is sinister is what some people do next: blend it into a dark, sticky carrier, adjust the colour, package it in a jar with a mountain on the label, and sell it as something scraped off a rock face.
The result is consistent, cheap, endlessly scalable and available in whatever quantity you want next Tuesday. Real shilajit is none of those things, which is precisely the commercial problem it has.
Why it passes the test everyone relies on
Because it was made to. This is worth sitting with for a moment.
A laboratory measures what you ask it to measure: heavy metals, microbiology, fulvic acid content. A manufactured product built to hit those numbers will hit them — often more reliably than genuinely wild material, which varies by valley, by season and by batch, because nature is not a quality control department.
A very consistent product is not automatically a good sign. Some variation between batches is what a natural material looks like.

Not the certificate. Provenance — and provenance is inconvenient to fake because it requires having been somewhere.
- A named place. Not a country and not a mountain range. A valley, at an altitude.
- The raw material, photographed. A manufactured product has no raw shilajit stage to show you, because it never had one.
- A drying method with a number attached. Days, not adjectives.
- Batch variation, admitted. A seller who tells you this batch runs slightly different from the last one is describing a natural material.
Why any of this matters
You could reasonably ask: if a manufactured product tests clean and contains fulvic acid, what is the actual problem?
The problem is that it is not the thing you were told you were buying. Shilajit has been used for centuries as a specific material with a specific origin. A fulvic acid paste is a different product, and it should be sold as one, at its own price, on its own terms.
We are not going to tell you a synthetic paste will harm you, because that is a claim and we do not make those. We will say it is not shilajit, and that being able to tell the difference is worth five minutes of your attention.
Questions people also ask
It is a widely traded industrial ingredient, sold in bulk. That availability is exactly why a high fulvic acid figure on its own proves nothing about origin.
Sometimes. Real resin firms in the cold, softens in your hand, stretches, and tastes distinctly bitter and mineral. But the better fakes behave plausibly, which is why provenance evidence beats kitchen tests.
Not on its own, and an unusually high figure with no report behind it should make you more suspicious rather than less. One stated figure, tied to a named lab and a batch number, is worth more than a bigger number with nothing attached.
