The short answer
A lab report alone cannot tell you shilajit is real, because lab-created shilajit is built to pass one. Ask instead for four things: evidence of harvesting, evidence of the raw material, evidence of filtration, and evidence of sun-drying. Then use the report to confirm what the evidence already showed you.
Why the certificate everyone asks for proves so little
Here is the uncomfortable part. Synthetic fulvic acid can be bought commercially, by the kilo, from suppliers who will ship it anywhere. Blend it into a dark paste and you have something that will test beautifully.
It was built to the spec. Of course it passes.
A certificate tells you that a sample somebody sent to a laboratory contained what the laboratory measured. It does not tell you where the material came from, whether it was ever inside a mountain, whether it was dried in an oven in an afternoon, or whether it has any relationship at all to the jar in your hand.
That last one matters most. A report with no batch number, or a seller who cannot tell you which batch your own jar came from, is a report about somebody else's shilajit.
There is a second quiet problem almost nobody mentions: the laboratory is told what the sample is. When we send ours, we say this is shilajit, and the lab measures heavy metals such as lead and arsenic in it. No instrument exists that certifies a paste actually came out of a mountain. A factory-made paste can pass a heavy-metals screen more easily than the real thing, because it never spent centuries inside mineral rock.
The fulvic number plays the same trick. Fulvic acid is sold in bulk as an ingredient, so a label shouting 85% is easy to manufacture. Natural shilajit typically tests between 50–75%, and the figure moves with the season and the rock face. More than nature puts in is not a stronger jar. It is an additive.
None of which makes lab reports worthless. They are necessary. They are simply not sufficient, and the whole category has spent a decade pretending otherwise because it is the cheapest possible form of proof to produce.

Ask where it was collected, and ask to see it. Not a stock photograph of a mountain range — the actual rock face, with the actual person working it, on a date.
Shilajit seeps out of stone in summer, when the sun warms the rock enough to push it through. It is scraped by hand at altitude. There is no machine, there is no farm, and there is no way to scale it. That is the first reason genuinely wild shilajit is not cheap, and it is also why a brand that has never been to its own source cannot produce this photograph.
For scale: our own harvesters, mostly the same families every season, bring close to 500 kg of raw shilajit down from faces at 17,000–18,000 ft, one pack at a time. That is what a real harvest looks like, and it photographs easily.
What to ask: which valley, what altitude, which month, and can I see it.

Check two: evidence of the raw material
What comes down the mountain is not the product. It is raw shilajit mixed with the stone and plant matter it came out with, and it looks exactly as unappealing as that sounds.
Quality also shows before any lab gets involved. Dense, resin-rich seams carry the rare golden-red tint that graders look for first; dull, crumbly material sits at the bottom of the scale. You can see the difference in a photograph, which is exactly why sellers who own their material publish photographs.
Most brands have never seen their own raw material, because they never had any. They bought a finished paste from a broker, in a drum, already purified by somebody they have never met. Ask for a photograph of the raw material and the conversation usually stops.

Check three: evidence of filtration
Purification is the step that turns raw shilajit into something you can take. Traditional herbal purification with Triphala, then ultra UV, then nano filtration — about a week of work in our case.
Nothing is added at this stage and nothing is extracted. The rock and plant matter comes out; the shilajit stays what it was. A seller who describes their product as "raw and unfiltered" is describing a step they skipped, not a virtue.
Two rules should hold through the whole stage, at any facility: no heat, ever, and nothing artificial, ever. Water, herbs, filters and patience do all of the work. If a seller cannot say how their product was filtered, assume the fastest method, not the gentlest.

Check four: evidence of drying
This is the one nobody can fake quickly, which is exactly why it is the most useful.
Sun-drying resin takes 45–70 days in open air. The powder that goes into capsules takes 100–120 days, because it has to be drier still. A fire or an industrial oven does the same job in a few hours, which is the entire reason heat is used — and heat is also the problem, because the compound profile the mountain spent centuries building does not survive it intact.
Almost nobody discloses their drying method, because there is no rule saying they must. So ask. And ask to see the beds.

The tests you can run at home, and what they are worth
These are genuinely useful, and they are also not conclusive. Use them to catch obvious fakes, not to certify a good one.
- Temperature. Real resin stiffens in a cold room and softens in your hand. Something that stays the same consistency at every temperature has usually been cut with something that does.
- Stretch. Warm a small piece between your fingers. It should stretch. Heat-dried material tends to be brittle and glassy, and snaps.
- Water. It should dissolve fully in warm water and leave a dark, even, golden-brown liquid — no grit at the bottom, no oily film on top.
- Smell and taste. Mineral, earthy, distinctly bitter. Burnt is a bad sign. Sweet is a worse one.
- The flame test, which you should ignore. It circulates constantly and tells you almost nothing reliable. Plenty of adulterated pastes behave the same way under a lighter.
Now use the lab report properly
Once the four checks are satisfied, the certificate becomes genuinely useful — as confirmation rather than as the whole case.
The version that means something has a batch number on it, and the seller can tell you which batch your own jar came from. You should be able to ask with your order number, get the batch, and download the report for it. Anything less than that is a PDF.
